Percolation Test EPA 2021 COP / Instalation

A Percolation Test is used to measure how well the soil in a specific area can absorb water. Essentially, it evaluates the hydraulic assimilation capacity of the subsoil, or in simpler terms, how efficiently the ground can soak up water.

The test involves digging a small percolation hole and filling it with water, then recording how long it takes for the water level to drop by a certain amount. This helps determine how suitable the soil is for handling wastewater from septic systems or rainwater runoff, ensuring the land can properly absorb and filter water without causing drainage issues.

In many cases, passing a percolation test is essential for meeting building or environmental regulations, particularly when installing septic tanks or designing drainage systems for a property.
